Scientists have observed in the study of the aging mechanisms affecting current lithium-ion batteries that the loss of lithium over time is one of the main causes of performance degradation. With this in mind, they have developed and tested a "regenerative" process that promises to reduce the significant cost and complexity associated with recycling battery components and materials.
As energy storage technology plays an increasingly important role in our daily lives, and the popularity of electric vehicles has increased dramatically, the availability of materials for the manufacture of lithium-ion batteries, their safe handling and recycling strategies are increasingly important. problem.
Although Europe and other regions are beginning to introduce laws requiring the use of recycled materials in battery production, economically extracting these materials remains a major challenge for recyclers-separating and purifying the materials to the point where they can be reused requires multiple expensive and energy-intensive processes.
Scientists led by Aalto University in Finland initially studied the aging mechanism of lithium cobalt oxide commonly used in consumer electronics and made an observation to study new ways to extend its service life or achieve component reuse without the complex process of stripping them into raw materials. Professor Tanja Kallio of Aalto University explained: "We noticed that one of the main causes of battery degradation is the depletion of lithium in the electrode material. Nevertheless, these structures can remain relatively stable, so we wanted to see if they could be reused."
The team developed an electrolytic process to replenish lithium in the battery electrodes, and then compared the performance of electrodes treated in this way with electrodes made of brand new materials. The results of the study were published in the journal ChemSusChem, entitled "Reuse of lithium cobalt oxide electrodes collected from spent lithium-ion batteries after electrochemical lithium replenishment".
The team found that the re-lithiation process helped to restore the original electrode structure, showing only slightly less capacity, rate capability and cycling performance than the brand-new battery. The group further noted that similar electrolysis processes are already used in various industries and that their method is also worth studying on an industrial scale.
Kallio said: "By reusing the battery structure, we can avoid a lot of labor that is common in the recycling process, and at the same time, we believe that this method can help companies that are developing industrial recycling."
Currently, the next goal of the Aalto University research team is to test and optimize its process for other battery chemistries, especially the nickel-rich cathode design that has been mass-produced in recent years, mainly for electric vehicle batteries.
